The Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC is seeking unpaid, part to full-time interns (12-35hrs/week) for Fall 2016. Internship start/end dates and hours are customized with the academic schedule of the chosen candidate.

The Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC seeks to promote a better understanding of the Government of Japan’s public diplomacy efforts and policies, the strength and importance of the Japan-US relationship, as well as Japan’s culture and people. We strive to build bridges between the two cultures through highlighting our international and educational exchange, economic partnerships, and defense cooperation.
Requirements
Studies:
- Enrolled in a U.S. accredited university throughout duration of internship.
- Seeking a degree or certification in Public Diplomacy, Communications, Journalism, Design, International Studies, Japanese Studies, Asian American Studies or a related field.
Languages/Skills:
- English: Fluent in speaking/reading/writing
- Excellent writing, public speaking, and organizational skills
- Superior interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to take initiative and work successfully both independently and in teams
- Ability to edit images would be preferred
Availability:
- Interns are required to work at least 12 hours per week. Generally these hours are between 10am-5:00pm Monday through Friday.
- Interns must be available to begin and end the internship within a week or two of the specified
Intern Job Description
Interns at the Embassy of Japan contribute to and participate in valuable public diplomacy and international relations programs by assisting diplomats and Embassy staff. Specific duties include:
- Drafting and editing content for the Embassy of Japan’s social media accounts
- Conducting research and reporting on topics of interest to the Embassy of Japan
- Creating resource materials to educate the American public on Japan’s public diplomacy efforts
- Creation of flyers and promotional materials through image editing and graphic design
- Assisting Japanese diplomats and Embassy staff with public outreach
