DIVERSITY TIP OF THE WEEK: Examine the Small Choices

When building an open and welcoming community, we all have the power to make it better by examining the biases and influences around the decisions we make every day.

If we do student programming, what kinds of people do we feature in our advertisements?

If we are responsible for purchases, what biases might we unconsciously have about businesses owned by women or people of color?

If we are asked to work in a team or on a group project, who do we automatically think will work hard?

Each of these situations reveals that each of our individual decisions have a cumulative effect that can make our campus more open, but only if we are vigilant around our own biases.
