Partners in Print: New Option for Global Service or Global Internship

Global Communities is pleased to share a newly approved option for the Global Experience requirement starting Spring 2017:
Partners in Print (PNP) is a program in which UMD students conduct evening workshops with parents and their kindergarten, first and second grade children enrolled in Prince George's County schools. These workshops are centered on ways parents can engage their children in reading at home. The majority of families involved in the program are new or recent immigrants from countries in Central America, Africa, and Asia. Workshops are conducted in English, Spanish, and other languages.
PNP runs Monday through Thursday from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and transportation is provided. Mentors are required to work two days per week on either a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule and must be able to commit to that schedule for the entire semester. In total, mentors must complete at least 75-80 hours over the course of the semester, at 6 hours per week for 12 weeks, plus an additional 3-8 hours for training.

Applicants must submit an application which includes Spring 2017 class schedule and resume, participate in an interview, and be selected for the program.

The online application form is available NOW at www.arac.umd.edu

GC students who are selected as PNP mentors have two ways to use it to fulfill their Global Experience requirement:

A) Global Service Course

  2. Upon confirmation of your selection, Notify Natalie Vinski Ibrahim and receive permission to register for online Spring 2017 course, BSGC398 Global Service (3-credits)
  3. Complete all service hours as required by PNP (75-80 hours over the course of the semester, at 6 hours per week for 12 weeks, plus an additional 3-8 hours for training) AND complete all required BSGC398A course work
B) Global Internship Course
  1. Apply and be selected as a PNP mentor
  2. Apply for and receive approval to register for a 3-credit internship experience for Spring 2017 through your major, BSOS, or any other college/department. BSOS internship courses are open to all majors:https://bsosundergrad.umd.edu/engagement/internships-credit
  3. You may be required to work additional hours depending on the requirements of your internship course-- check with your internship course instructor for more information
