Setting and ReportingThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The United Nations Environment Programme's North America Office, is one of six regional offices .The mission of the office is to assist in carrying out UNEP’s global program by fostering cooperation and building partnerships on environmental issues between the North American region and the broader international community.
To achieve this mission, the office promotes collaboration between UNEP and all sectors of North American society, including the U.S. and Canadian governments, the private sector and civil society groups and stakeholders.UNEP North America Office Internship is for minimum of 3 months, with a possibility for extension depending on the needs of the Organization.The internship is full-time and UNPAID. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.ResponsibilitiesDaily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.Competencies
The responsibilities of the UN Environment Communications internship involve:
•Assisting the Regional Information Officer and other staff in the timely delivery of materials and information to members of the media and other key stakeholders
•Assisting the Regional Information Officer in the organization and preparation for special events
•Daily updates to social media accounts, including Facebook and Twitter
•Updating the regional external web site and intranet pages
•Assisting with outreach campaigns and activities
•Assisting with development and production of quarterly newsletter
•Undertaking research for speeches and presentations
•Preparing advocacy materials
•Updating and maintaining contact lists of media, civil society and other UN Environment partners
•Distributing daily regional news report
•Writing memos and taking minutesCore Competencies:Education

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Desired Qualifications:
•Background in environmental issues, international relations, and/or communications/journalism
•Social media abilities
•Design skills and knowledge of online programs (Adobe, InDesign, etc.)
•Excellent writing and editing skills
•Knowledge of U.S. and Canadian media desiredApplicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required.
