In addition, students are required to engage in a global experience, such as studying or providing service abroad, or working on international issues at an internship or volunteer opportunity in the US. All of this is designed with two goals in mind: to expand understanding of the problems and opportunities the interconnected world brings, and to provide experience working with people from different backgrounds and cultures.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Graduate Assistant primarily provides programmatic, teaching, and student advising support for Global Communities. Specific responsibilities include:
Teaching and Advising
- Teaching Assistant for BSGC100 – Student In the University: Global Communities (1
credit course) - Advise first year Global Communities students.
- Grade course assignments and enter them into the course management website (ELMS).
- Assist with fall recruitment and admissions events.
- Assist/develop marketing materials for co-curricular and community development
- Respond to student inquiries.
- Create content for marketing materials social media platforms and website.
- Assist with social media outreach strategies and efforts.
- Assist with co-curricular programs and alumni outreach.
- Store and update student records, lesson plans, assignments, attendance.
- Attend weekly staff meetings to consult on teaching and student issues.
- Applicant must be a University of Maryland student enrolled in a graduate program; students in Higher Education Administration or Social Science disciplines preferred.
- Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to international education, diversity, and appreciation for cultural differences.
- Previous teaching experience strongly preferred.
- Flexible schedule and willingness to work occasional nights and weekends.
- Experience developing and executing academic and/or social programs preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in public speaking and in writing.
- Effective written and oral communication skills, attention to detail and highly organized.
- Team player who works well in a collaborative, dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.
- Studied or worked internationally.
- Experience using and creating content for various social media platforms.
- Previous work experience in a university setting.
