DIVERSITY TIP OF THE WEEK: Language Upgrade

The words that we use to describe different groups of people have changed over time. For example, there was once a time when use of the word "queer" would have been considered offensive. Now, however, the word "queer" is commonly used by members of the LGBTQ community. Likewise, different terms for racial groups have evolved over time such as the use of "Latina/o" instead of the more antiquated "Hispanic." In the same way that computers often need to have updated system software to be useful, it is important to update our diversity lexicon in ways that allow people the opportunity to choose language (terms, pronouns, etc.) that reflect who they are, even if learning those terms requires a small bit of effort.
