Summer Intern Job Description
The NCLR-Upward Bound Program at the Latin American Youth Center in
partnership with The George Washington University is currently accepting
applications for dynamic Summer Interns.
About Upward Bound at the Latin American Youth Center:
Upward Bound is a federally funded college access program that empowers potential firstgeneration college students to complete secondary education and continue through college. Upward Bound provides academic advising, tutoring, college workshops, and a Saturday Academy during the school year. Students also participate in a six week summer component at the George Washington University that consists of two weeks of residential instruction, culminating with a week-long out-of state college tour. Upward Bound is introducing Global Learning as an outcome embedded in classes, workshops, discussions, and programs. Teachers, advisors, and staff will develop content and teaching strategies for students to 1) Define Global Learning 2) Develop critical thinking and learning skills that address "Big Question" about the conditions that shape our world 3) Apply as leaders and change agents in a global society. Global Learning enhances our charge to prepare students with an understanding about college, setting goals for higher education, and develop as independent and responsible adults.
About the Summer Program Intern position:
Essential role: The intern is part of a team of four that supports the coordination of the Summer Program by serving as Teaching Assistants for instructors, supporting educational advising interventions, mentoring students, and addressing logistical needs (supplies, copies, lunch tickets, etc).
Ideal candidate: The ideal candidate can demonstrate an ability to engage with students as mentor and educator, make appropriate interventions to address logistical issues, demonstrate self-initiative, volunteer to help staff when needed, and understand the conditions surrounding youth from underserved communities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching & Youth Development
- As Teaching Assistant; take daily attendance, accompany students to staff during
disciplinary action, provide copies and supplies for instructors, assist in the
administration of assessments
- Assist teachers with daily classroom assignments and lesson plans
- Supervise student transition between classes and afternoon activities
process and reinforcing the importance of education and life-long learning.
- Actively participate in instructors, staff, and students
- Assist with planning and preparation of weekly field trips and other activities
- Co-facilitate advisory sessions with academic advisors
- Aide Residential Assistants with the residential move in process
Non-Profit Management
- Keep track of attendance and participation for approximately 50 students
- Maintain and reporting inventory of supplies
- Some use of database work
- Accompany staff on Summer Tour
- Research higher education and youth development funding opportunities
- Network with potential funders, target schools, and other college access providers
- Assist with planning of future fundraisers and networking opportunities
- Update and maintain all publications including but not limited to: brochures, websites,
and UB summer newsletter
Time Commitment & Other Duties
- Participate in Staff Orientation (June 13th-15th, Time TBD)
- Program duration is Monday, June 25th through Friday, August 3rd, 2012 Mondays
through Fridays from 9am to 5pm
- Accompany student transition between classes and lunch time
- Participate in all-group activities such as Opening Field Day and End of Year BBQ
QUALIFICATIONS
Completed at least 2 years of college
Experience or interest in working with first generation, low income, college bound students
Excellent communication, interpersonal, advising, writing, and research skills
Ability to multitask and work in a fast paced work environment
Strong Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills
Highly organized and detailed oriented
Criminal background check and TB test results required
WORKING HOURS
20-30 hours per week
Some weekends and evenings
COMPENSATION
$500 stipend available upon completion of the summer program.
